The Ritz supplies the grandeur. Rivoli Bar feels comparatively underwhelming, with more of a dated restaurant’s character than the atmosphere of a destination cocktail room. The contrast with the hotel is difficult to ignore: the surrounding luxury raises expectations that the bar itself does not quite meet.

A small table near the counter ought to bring you close to the center of things. Here, the counter adds little energy, and the room feels neither especially grand nor particularly familiar and welcoming. The quiet afternoon mood gives conversation room, but it does little to create a sense of occasion. The setting is the principal reason to keep expectations measured.

A drink worth asking for

The menu is more promising than the atmosphere. The Iron Lady is refreshing and earns a recommendation, giving a single cocktail stop a clear starting point. There are other options worth exploring, even if the room offers less encouragement to extend the evening.

The espresso martini is fine but less persuasive. Its simple flavor profile lacks punch and depth, leaving an impression of a drink that needs more attention. The issue is in the glass rather than a shortage of choice on the menu. A good alternative order cannot quite resolve the room’s limitations.

Keep the stop brief

The welcome begins with prompt seating. Service thereafter feels slow relative to the quiet room, and the staff’s manner adds little warmth. This is adequate hospitality rather than a compelling part of the experience. The pacing makes the absence of atmosphere more noticeable instead of helping the room settle into an easy rhythm.

A quiet early date or business conversation can make use of the setting, but Rivoli’s clearest role is one afternoon cocktail after Buckingham Palace. Treat it as a short addition to the day, with the Iron Lady as the reason to sit down. For a longer stretch of drinking in London, the combination of room, service and cocktails needs to offer more than this.
