A library mood, a city away

Friendliness matters as much as the range of possibilities. The service gives the upscale setting an approachable side, and the bartenders’ willingness to respond to a preference makes a seat at the bar especially appealing. Come with an idea of what you like and leave room for a suggestion.

Stay for another?

The strongest occasion is a date before or after dinner. Two people fit the scale of the room, and a drink here can give either end of the evening a distinct atmosphere. A small group also works if everyone is comfortable on stools and understands that space is limited. A nightcap makes sense on the same terms.

That intimacy also creates the limitation. For a tightly scheduled group or a crawl between bars, somewhere with more public space may be easier. The small bar is less convincing as somewhere to spend an entire night, particularly if a group needs generous seating. For an atmospheric stop with good drinks and engaging bartenders, come early, aim for a seat and let the room take you out of the city for a while. And if the room feels too tight, the location works in its favor: some of downtown’s best bars and restaurants are only a few steps away.
